History of Westmount
Malcolm Groat, a Hudson Bay Company employee, built his home on the land that is now Westmount in 1878. Groat sold most of his real estate to developers, and by 1910, the city of Edmonton had annexed the rest of his land. In 1910, Westmount became an established neighbourhood due to its proximity to the rapidly expanding Downtown Edmonton and access to the streetcar, which provided quick commutes to the Downtown Area. The majority of the single-family character homes were built before 1950, however, Westmount has been experiencing an infill of new real estate such as apartments, condos, and mixed-use properties. Westmount is bounded by 111 Avenue to the North, Queen Mary Park neighbourhood to the east, Groat Road to the west and south, and Stony Plain Road and 124 Street to the southeast.
