Strathearn History
As mentioned, Strathearn is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Alberta. The neighborhood's history dates to 1907. In 1907, the city of Strathcona annexed Strathearn, five years later, Strathcona became part of Edmonton after Strathcona amalgamated with Edmonton.
Residents believe that the neighborhood inherited its name from the governor-general, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, and Strathearn. Translated from Scottish, Strathearn means "the valley of the Irish" or "the Valley of River Earn."
The post-world war two period -between 1948 to 1945 is when many homes in the area originated. Consequently, most of the homes have large lots, and there are some older style strawberry box houses. This style of home is named after it's square foundation and because it looks like a strawberry box. The older homes are pocket-friendly but may require some renovations.
