Spruce Grove History
In the early days of Canadian history, many towns were named after their surrounding landscape. At the time, Spruce Grove featured Groves of spruce trees and poplars, and since Poplar Grove was already established to the west, the town was named Spruce Grove.
Spruce Grove was home to Scottish and French settlers in 1891 and the town originally consisted of a general store, blacksmith shop, hotel livery yards, and a Roman Catholic Church. The town's centre was situated along what is now known as Highway 16. Spruce Grove was incorporated as a village on March 14, 1907, but was dissolved on August 30, 1916. However, it was re-incorporated as a village on January 1, 1955, and as a town on January 1, 1971, and as a city on March 1, 1986. The town is bounded on the north by Yellowhead Highway and west by Veterans Boulevard. The southern border is close to Highway 628, and the eastern border is close to Range Road 271.

Spruce Grove offers lots of leisure and recreational activities enjoyable all year round. The TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre is one of the major attractions in the area.
