Glenora History

The land that is now Glenora was originally owned by Malcolm Groat before it was eventually owned by James Carruthers in 1905, a wealthy grain merchant and real estate developer from Montreal, after changing hands several times. The neighborhood started to grow after Carruthers, in partnership with the city of Edmonton, built a bridge across the ravine that led to the extension of the streetcar line into Glenora by the city council.

Glenora is bounded by 107 Avenue on the North, on the east by Groat Road, on the west by 142 Street, and on the south by the North Saskatchewan River Valley and the MacKinnon Ravine. There are several places of interest in the neighborhood to explore. The notable ones include Alberta Government House which was home to the first six lieutenant Governors of Alberta, the Royal Alberta Museum (old location), and Government House Park. Also popular in the area is Glenora Park which is regularly frequented by children and other local residents.
