Downtown Edmonton was relatively developed by 1912 however, after the end of world war II and the discovery of oil in Alberta in 1947, the city grew at a fast pace to accommodate the increase in population brought about by the oil boom. The city is bounded by 105 Avenue to the North, 109 street to the West, 97 street to the East, 97 Avenue and Rossdale Road to the South, and the North Saskatchewan River to the Southeast.

The city has several parks namely: Alex Decoteau Park, Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, and Mechanized River Valley Access.
