Devon History

Devon's establishment came about as a result of one of the largest oil discoveries in the world. On February 13, 1947, Imperial Oil discovered oil at the Leduc Number 1 Discovery Well, currently situated south of Devon. As a result, Imperial Oil decided to set up Devon town to house oil workers. The town was named after the Devonian Reef formation in which the oil was discovered. Oil remains a major part of Devon's economy, but the town has also diversified into other sectors such as tourism and manufacturing. In January 1950, Devon was incorporated as a village and later in March that year, as a town. Devon's boundaries are defined by the North Saskatchewan River Valley to the north and east, Devonian Highway to the west and Highway 19 to the south.
